DEATH FROM SUFFOCATION – A shocking case of suffocation through the incautious use of charcoal has occurred at the fox kennels of Mr John Chaworth MUSTERS of Annesley-hall, Notts. On Wednesday night two men, named Wm MORLEY and Wm SWIFT, went to bed after having lighted a charcoal fire in the room. About four o’clock on the following morning, the whip (John SQUIRES) and a man named Edward SHIELDS (the boiler to the establishment) went to call them up, but could not make them hear. SQUIRES therefore lifted up SHIELDS to the window which he forced open, and he then found SWIFT dead, and MORLEY perfectly insensible. The latter was immediately taken out of the room, and Dr FORBES was sent for. Proper remedies were applied, but there was very little hope of his recovery. Both the men are about twenty years of age and unmarried.

FATAL ICE ACCIDENT – TWO CHILDREN DROWNED – A terrible ice accident occurred on Saturday afternoon on a pond at Annesley Park Notts, the seat of Mr John Chaworth MUSTERS. A return of frosty weather during the last few days had caused the formation of a sheet of thin ice upon the pond. Some children began to slide upon it, but it gave way, and precipitated five of them into deep water. Help was obtained but only one child was saved.
A later telegram states only two lives were lost. It seems a number of persons were skating on the pond when four youths were immersed in the water, which is about six feed deep. A courageous attempt by a man named Albert BOOTH was made to save their lives, rescuing two of the, but the other two drowned.
