CONFESSION OF INCENDIARISM – On Saturday, John HITCH was charged with setting fire to a cornstack at Arnold near Nottingham, the property of Mrs CHEEDOOM, on September 24, valued at €200. Prisoner was seen begging in the neighbourhood, but received no relief. He travelled on to Doncaster where the authorities committed him to Wakefield Gaol as a refractory pauper. While there he confessed to the governor that he had fired the stack and he had done it to despite the country, as he had nowhere to go. Prisoner remanded.

On Thursday night a miner named Jas. BROOKLEY, living at Red Hill, in the parish of Arnold near Nottingham, during a quarrel with his wife, threw a poker at her and it struck her on the left temple and penetrated to the brain. She died yesterday from the effects of the injury, never having recovered consciousness. She was thirty-two years of age, and leaves four children. The man is in custody in Nottingham.
