DREADFUL ACCIDENT ON THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY – An accident of an alarming character happened yesterday at Aslockton, on the above line, a few miles from Nottingham, by which one man lost his life and that of another was placed in great jeopardy. Early in the morning a coal train left Nottingham and was followed by an excursion on the way to Hull October Fair. When the goods train reached Aslockton, it was shunted onto another line to allow the special to pass, and while standing there a train of “empties” came in the opposite direction from Peterborough. There was no time to stop so a fearful collision took place, which threw a number of carriages off the line and smashed them to pieces. The driver of the Peterborough train, a single man named Samuel HUTCHINSON of gonaldston aged 32 years, was killed upon the spot, and the fireman was so dreadfully injured that he is not expected to recover. For a long time the line was completely blocked and traffic suspended.
