SATURDAY, 14 OCTOBER 1854, Daily News 2622,
MURDER AT BASFORD – On Friday week a young man found the body of Helmley PEARSON, a native of Basford, floating in the River Leen, his throat fearfully cut. Police officers learned a great deal of jealousy had existed between a sawyer named Thomas CHARLESWORTH and the deceased, respecting the wife of the latter, and they had been seen struggling together on Sunday night. CHARLESWORTH was apprehended and a search of his house found a coat he had worn Sunday night considerably strained and appearing to have been washed; also a clasp knife was found in the pantry hidden behind some pots. Prisoner was handcuffed and taken to Nottingham County Gaol about 3 o’clock on Saturday morning. Prisoner is a native of Ashby-de-la-zouch. He is only about 30 years of age, has had three wives previous to his present wife, and four children, all of whom are dead. The wife says he had frequently beaten her, and had threatened to murder her. The jury returned a verdict of “wilful murder” against Thomas CHARLESWORTH the prisoner, who betrayed not the slightest agitation. (Very short version of the newspaper report)
