SATURDAY, 1 FEBRUARY 1868, Bristol Mercury 4061,
AN ATROCIOUS DEED A dastardly outrage has been committed in the village of Old Basford near Nottingham. On Wednesday, the manager of the co-operation in David-lane, Mr Laban BEXON, was enveloped in an explosive flash which singed off his whiskers and beard, badly scorched his face, and set his coat and shirt-sleeves on fire. Stunned and bewildered, he groped his way to the pump to put out the fire. Outside the shop, a girl named CHAWNER was blown down in the road by the force of the explosion. The explosion was caused by a canister containing gunpowder being thrown in the window. It was first thought BEXON had lost his eyesight but he is no progressing quite favourably. The police are making every inquiry but at present no clue has been met with.

WEDNESDAY, 28 JUNE 1876, Derby Mercury 8429,
ATTEMPTED SUICIDE Harriet SHAW (48), wife of William SHAW employed at the Gas-yard, Old Basford Notts, cut her throat at the home of Mr HODGKINSON to whom she is related. Her brother died six weeks ago and his death was playing on her mind. Dr STEWART is of the opinion the woman will recover.

An inquest was held at Basford near Nottingham yesterday on the body of William LANE who had committed suicide. His wife was found dead in her bed on Tuesday and the inquest on Wednesday found she died from inflammation of the membrane of the brain, brought on by her husbands ill-usage. While the inquest on his wife was being held, the body of LANE was found hanging in a tree near the village. The jury returned a verdict of felo de se.
