PETITION FOR LIQUIDATION – C.L. HATHWAITE, Goldsmith-street, Nottingham, brick manufacturer, formerly of Alma Cottage Scout-Lane Nottingham, and formerly carrying on business as brick and tile manufacturer under the style of the Mapperly Brick Company, and as a farmer on the Mapperly Plains-road, and in Scout-lane Basford, Nottingham.

FATAL ACCIDENT – On Thursday an inquest was held at the Hurt’s Arms Hotel, Ambergate-Derby, on the body of T.E. NEWTON of New Basford, near Nottingham, hosiery manufacturer, who met with his death under most distressing circumstances. Moses CHAPPELL found the deceased at the bottom of a shaft of the Lime Works. Verdict “Found dead in the bottom of a hoist at Ambergate Lime Works and in the opinion of the jury fell down the shaft accidentally.” (Account of witnesses omitted)

NOTTINGHAM – At the Town Hall yesterday, a middle-aged woman named FROGG was charged on her own confession of the wilful murder of a child aged one year and ten months, whose mother, a domestic servant, lived at Basford-Notts. The prisoner alleged she drowned the child at Sheffield. It transpired she had once been in a lunatic asylum. Remanded for inquiries .

CASES IN DIVORCE COURTS – THORNHILL v. THORNHILL/ROBERTS – Petitioner, a lace manufacturer of Basford, sought divorce by reason of his wife’ adultery with the co-respondent, a ganger of excavators. The couple married in 1870 and had two children. In August 1877 the co-respondent came to live in the neighbourhood and petitioner’s wife became very friendly with him. They subsequently eloped together. His Lordship was not satisfied with the evidence and allowed the case to stand over for supplemental evidence to be furnished.

DEATHS – 2nd instant at New Basford Nottingham, Lucy Elizabeth, wife of Frederick COATES of that town, formerly Sudbury, aged 30 years.

A considerable portion of the dyeworks of Messrs COX and Sons, Old Basford, Nottingham, was destroyed by fire yesterday. The damage, which is heavy, is covered by insurance. A large number of operatives are thrown out of work.

The extensive works of the Midland Hosiery Company at New Basford near Nottingham were destroyed by fire on Saturday. Loss is estimated at €40,000. Over 400 workmen will be thrown out of work.
