Page one 1926c

Visiting the Old Farm (now the Shelia Russell center) I looked in to the history of this farm, on finding out that the Burton Family were one the earliest followed by the Towle family, The Burton Families have been in Bilborough since about 1668. The earliest Farmer ? was John Burton on the census 1871 who was born in Gotham came to work as a Agricultural labourer for Ann Towle.

Manor Farm (Burtons)

The Farm in Bilborough was located in amongst a very small community of cottages and houses in 1861 over a radius of three quarters of a mile. with field systems all around, a church, Blacksmiths and Manor House? that was probably located near the Farm and church but long since gone?

The overlook of Bilborough

Opposite the farm was a scrub meadow that was very overgrown with thick grasses and a large pond with a spring of sweet ice cool water running into the end with five beech trees standing tall where children used to play on rope swings, In winter they used the pond as a ice ring, summer time I used to get frog spawn and crested newts from in the weed around the edge.

Overlooking the village

I can remember that there has always been on way into the small hamlet, leading its way to the church of St Martin of Tours, but it was earlier dedicated to St Cuthbert, St Martins has been around since the 13th century.
