Church Farm, "Blacksmith cottage"


Page Four 1900-30

The village Blacksmiths cottage was possible late 18th or early 19th century when all that was around was fields and a caraway between Strelley and Broxtowe, this cottage is built on a crossroads one corner the Blacksmiths the other the pinfold and cowshed and a outbuilding on the other, also set back from the cart way on the other corner was Cherry Tree cottage.

This roadway was possibly the only link from Chilwell Dam farm, Burtons farm, the church ,Strelley and Broxtowe in the four directions? This area had three farms Chilwell Dam, Broxtowe Hall and Burtons with Manor farm being built on Strelley road late 19th century

This cottage still has lots of original features that were found by the last owner uncovering old stone floors and some of the beams are the original, also visible is the large opening that was the main double doors on the roadside although not used anymore and brick up.

Cottage garden view this next image we are looking back over the garden towards Burtons farm down church road about 1918 when the Burton family were farming here.

Occasional in my search I get to see inside these lovely old buildings this cottage with its creepers, some brick some stone walls and what was the old forge place, still has its original chamferd span beams and 2 complete brick forges and chimneys, one with brick hood, and out building that was the wash-house also its own well in the garden.
