Friday, 29 December 1876, Newcastle Courant 10540,
ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT – At Doncaster Police Court, Jas GROOBY belonging to Blyth Notts, was charged with embezzling various sums of money belonging to his master Wm CUMBERLEDGE potato merchant of Sheffield. Yesterday he made no defence and was committed to the Borough Sessions for trial. (Short version of story)

On Saturday Mrs WALKER of Blyth Hall Notts was charged before the Retford magistrates with having cruelly illtreated and tormented seven horses by not giving them sufficient fit and wholesome food. Her solicitor pleaded guilty and the veterinary surgeon’s report stated the animals were “living skeletons”. They had no food and were eating their scanty bed of litter. The bench inflicted the full penalty of €5 and €3.15s costs. (Short version of story)

Tennyson D’E JESSE vicar of St Peter’s – The Rev Ralph Thomas BROCKMAN assistant priest of Blyth, second son of the late Rev Ralph St Leger BROCKMAN vicar of Brightwell, to Anna Charlotte, only daughter of the late James SHELDRAKE Esq of Ipswich.

WILLS AND BEQUESTS – The will (dated April 12, 1884) of Mrs Ellen WALKER, late of Blyth Hall Nottingham, widow, who died on January 30, was proved on May 31, the value of the personal estate exceeding €224,000.
