MARRIAGE – At Newark Church on the 8th inst, Mr John EATCH of Bramcote Notts, widower, to Miss Eliza BURDETT, formerly of Chilwell near Nottingham.

Saturday, 19 July 1862, Manchester Times 241,
THE DESPERATE POACHING AFFRAY NEAR NOTTINGHAM – On Saturday last at the Shire-hall Nottingham, six men – named S. HARDY, H. MARTIN, John HALLAM, S. POTTER, J. DRAYCOTT and W. HALLAM – were taken before the sitting magistrates charged with being armed with bludgeons, stones &c for the purpose of taking game, on the preserves of Mr S. GREGORY of Bramcote Notts. Edward HUSBANDS, gamekeeper to Mr GREGORY, was on duty with another watcher, WRIGHT, when they came upon the gang of poachers and heard W. HALLAM say “Come on, you ____, Let’s kill ‘em; there are but two”. The poachers then attacked, leaving witness insensible in the field. WRIGHT gave corroborative evidence. The bench committed the whole gang for trial at the next assizes.

PETTY SESSIONS December 31 – Superintendent SHAW summoned Joseph ATKIN, a labourer of Bramcote Notts, for exposing his person to two girls, nine years of age each, on November 30th at Sandiacre. The case was clearly proved against him by Mr SMEDLEY, manufacturer, of Sandiacre. He was committed to Derby Gaol for three months with hard labour.

DEATHS – GREGORY, Mr J.S. of Hartaxton Manor, Grantham, and Bramcote Hills, Notts, at Dover-street, aged 65, June 7.

– POACHING AFFRAY IN NOTTS – Yesterday morning about 2 o’clock several gamekeepers in the employ of Mrs SHERWIN-GREGORY of Bramcote Hall, Notts, came upon a gang of poachers in Stapleford. A fight ensured with some of the keepers receiving severe cuts and bruises. Two policemen heard the shouts and went to the keepers’ assistance, but only one poacher, John PRATT, was apprehended. A large number of hares, rabbits and nets were found. PRATT, a native of Loughborough, was remanded.

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE – The body of Eliza ATKINS, aged 25, daughter of Samuel ATKINS, joiner of Bramcote, Notts, who was missed from the house of Mr W.H. SCOTT, J.P. of Draycott House, where she had been in service, a fortnight since, was found in the fishpond near the house on Saturday last, by Alfred CORNELL, foreman at some colour-works. At the inquest held atthe Rose and Crown Inn on Monday, before Mr Coroner WHISTON, the father of the deceased deposed he saw her on the Sunday previous to her disappearance and she was in good health and spirits. She had been in Mr SCOTT’s service 2 ˝ years this time, and three years on a previous occasion. Luke JOHNSON deposed there were no marks of violence on the body. Alfred CORNELL said he found the body on Saturday lying in the rushes about five yards from the side of the pond in three feet of water, wrapped up in an ulster and shawl. Police constable BLACKBURN, who got the body out of the water, said the drags had gone over the spot previously where the body was found without touching anything. Rebecca POCKHAM and Lucy HUDGWELL, two of the deceased’s fellow-servants, deposed to her spirits being good latterly. Jury returned a verdict of “Found drowned, without any marks of violence appearing on the body”.

MARRIAGE – FORSTER-HOLDEN – On the 16th inst at Bramcote Notts, by the Rev Robert HOLDEN, cousin of the bride, assisted by the Rev F. ROUGHTON, William Griffith FORSTER, younger son of the late William FORSTER of Eaton Hill, Tarporley, Cheshire, and White House, Heworth, Newcastle-on-Tyne, to Sybil Annie, daughter of Captain HOLDEN of Bramcote.

MARRIAGE – The marriage of Mr Herbert SMITH, eldest son of Mr Frederick SMITH of Bramcote Hall, Notts, with Miss Julia MANNINGTON-BULLER, took place at St Mark’s Church, North Audley-street, on Wednesday afternoon.

WILL OF CAPTAIN HOLDEN – The will of Capt Henry HOLDEN, Bramcote Hills, Notts, who died on February 1st, has been proved by Capt John HOLDEN, Nuttall Temple, Notts, and Mr Henry MELLISH of Hodstock Priory, Notts, nephews by whom the testator’s estate is sworn at €126,781.15s.9d.

WILLS AND BEQUESTS – The will of Capt Henry HOLDEN of Bramcote Hills, Nottingham, was proved on April 28, the value of the estate amounting to €125,781. The testator bequeaths €15,000 to his daughter, Mrs Sybil Anne FORSTER. €10,000 upon trust for his son Frederick William. €5,000 to his son Wilfred Millington. €5,000 each to his grandchildren, Sybil Mona Caroline HOLDEN, Frederick Holden Pratt BARLOW, and Violet Pratt BARLOW. €5,000 upon trust for his son-in-law Archibald Pratt BARLOW, for life, and then for his children. A conditional annuity of €500 to his daughter-in-law Maria Magdalene HOLDEN. €1,000 each to his executors. And legacies to his servants. He devised his real property to his grandson, Millington Elmhurst HOLDEN in tail mail. The residue of his personal estate he leaves to his sons, Ernest Frank and Wilfred Millington.
