Mr Howard Reuben Seeley.

Strelley & Bilborough 1920s

The Story of Mr Seeley the local "bobby" who came to work in the Parish`s Bilborugh and Strelley from Birmigham as told by his grandaughter.

Reuben Seeley
Constable Seeley

Howard Rueben Seeley was born lst July l882 at Aston, Birmingham, usually known as Rueben Seeley.

He served as an Apprentice Cabinet Maker, and upon completion of this he decided that the police force was for him. This caused quite a stir in his family as his father had his own business and obviously wanted his son to join him. .

He married in Birmingham in 1901 and his eldest daughter was born in l903, His second daughter was born in 1907 at Greasley, Notts. I can only deduce that he must have joined the Nottinghamshire Constabulary around 1905 as he served for 25 years and retired about 1930/31. .

He must have moved to the Bilborough/Strelley section in the late 1918's until the 1920's. During my childhood I do recall his affection for this part of his career, he loved the area, the villagers, and especially Squire Edge, he often spoke about this gentleman and how well he got on with him. He also spoke about local poachers and petty crime.

Mr & Mrs Reubin Seeley

His second daughter, my mother also went to school either at Bilborough or Strelley during his time there. .

When he left Bilborough/Strelley he finally finished his time as a police officer at Normanton, Keyworth and Plumtree, and upon retirement lived at Plumtree. .

He was a keen photographer and his carpentry skills showed in his home, he obviously inherited from his family as he also had a motorcycle and sidecar and later a car. He enjoyed travel, both locally and further afield in this country and I think his furthest journey must have been to Newquay in the late l930's. .

He died in the summer of l952 at the home of his eldest daughter and is buried at Kenilworth Church, Warwickshire.
